فَسـئَلُوا اَهلَ الذِّكرِ اِن كُنتُم لَا تَعلَمُونَ‏

So, ask the people (having the knowledge) of the Reminder (the earlier Scriptures), if you do not know.

Adjusting Zakat against Loan

Question:- I have given loan to my brother who has a lot of debts on him and is barely managing his household expenses including food. Can I write off the loan he has to pay me against Zakat?

Answer:- Zakat can't be paid by adjusting against loans. However, the debtee can give Zakat money to the debtor, make him the complete owner, and then demand the debtor for the return of the loan the debtor owes him.
